One of the questions we hear most often at the Routes and Roads bike shop in Paris is simple: what is the ideal tire pressure for a bicycle? However, there is no single answer. The pressure level depends on several factors: the type of bike, tire width, rider weight, and road conditions. An ideal pressure for a road bike on perfectly smooth asphalt, for example, can be too high for a gravel ride or urban commutes.

 

Routes and Roads experts regularly assist cyclists in choosing the optimal pressure for road, gravel, or urban bikes. In this article, we will see how to choose the right pressure for different situations and what aspects influence comfort, speed, and safety on a bike.

Why it is important to choose the right pressure

Many cyclists inflate their tires by eye, without a pressure gauge, simply by touch. They lightly press the tire with their fingers or assess its rigidity to guess if the pressure is sufficient. However, a difference of just 0.5 to 1 bar can already significantly change how the bike handles.

With too high pressure, the bike does indeed roll faster on smooth asphalt, but the ride also becomes harsher. The slightest road irregularity is felt more strongly and transmitted to the hands and back, while grip can decrease.

Without a pressure gauge, it's easy to end up with unsuitable tire pressure. 

Conversely, too low pressure increases rolling resistance. The bike feels heavier to ride, and impacts from bumps or potholes increase the risk of damaging the tire or rim. The goal is therefore to find the right balance between speed, comfort, and reliability.

Properly adjusted pressure directly influences several essential aspects:

  • speed;
  • comfort;
  • grip;
  • puncture protection.

In the city, this is particularly important. Parisian streets often alternate between old cobblestones, worn asphalt patches, and small irregularities. With overinflated tires, every road imperfection is felt in the arms and back. Conversely, overly soft tires increase the risk of what cyclists call a "snake bite" – a puncture caused by the rim hitting an obstacle.

How to measure pressure

Bicycle tire pressure is usually expressed in PSI or bars. PSI (pounds per square inch) is a unit used in English-speaking countries and literally means "pounds per square inch." It indicates the pressure exerted by air on a surface of one square inch. In Europe, bars are more commonly used.

Pressure indications are often found on tires and inner tubes.

On the sidewall of the tire, you'll almost always find a recommended pressure range. This indicates the safety limits, but not necessarily the ideal pressure for every cyclist. For example, a tire like the Maxxis Reaver displays a range of 35 to 60 PSI. In practice, many cyclists ride slightly below the maximum value to gain comfort and grip.

The table below shows indicative pressure values depending on the type of bike. These values are starting points: rider weight and terrain type can modify the settings.

Road tire pressure

On a road bike, pressure is generally higher. Narrow tires contain less air and must therefore be inflated more to maintain their shape and limit rolling resistance.

For modern road bikes, the following values can be used as a guideline:

  • 25 mm tires: 6-7 bar;
  • 28 mm tires: 5-6.5 bar;
  • 30–32 mm tires: 4.5–6 bar.

But be careful, maximum pressure doesn't always mean maximum speed. On perfect asphalt, it effectively reduces rolling resistance. But on ordinary roads, the situation can be different.

Maximum pressure isn't always the best.

In Île-de-France, you often encounter old asphalt with cracks or irregularities. If the pressure is too high, the tire adapts less well to the ground and loses some of its contact with the road. The result: the bike can even become slower. For most cyclists, the best compromise is often in the middle of the recommended range, rather than at maximum pressure.


The load distribution between the wheels must also be taken into account:

  • front wheel: slightly lower pressure;
  • rear wheel: about 0.3 to 0.5 bar higher.

For example, if the optimal pressure for your tires is around 5 bar, you can set it as follows: approximately 4.7 bar in the front; 5 to 5.2 bar in the rear. This slight difference improves load distribution, comfort, and reduces the risk of punctures.

Gravel tire pressure

Gravel bikes are designed to ride on mixed surfaces: asphalt, gravel, dirt roads, or forest trails. Tire pressure is therefore significantly lower than on a road bike.

Softer tires increase the contact patch with the ground, which improves grip and stability on uneven terrain.

Here are the guidelines for most gravel bikes:

  • 35 mm tires: 3-4 bar;
  • 40 mm tires: 2.5-3.5 bar;
  • 45 mm tires: 2-3 bar.

For riding on gravel or dirt roads, it's better to reduce the pressure a little.

If most of the route is on asphalt, you can aim for the upper limit to reduce rolling resistance. However, for dirt roads or gravel sections, it is better to slightly reduce the pressure so that the tire absorbs vibrations better and offers more stable grip. This is particularly noticeable on long rides around Paris, for example, the "La Seine à Vélo" route or on the gravel tracks in the forests around Versailles and Fontainebleau.

With tubeless tires, the pressure can be further reduced by about 0.3 to 0.5 bar. The absence of an inner tube limits the risk of pinch flats and allows for a more comfortable ride.

Mountain bike tire pressure

Mountain bike tires generally operate at the lowest pressures. Their greater width and larger air volume allow the bike to better absorb uneven terrain.

MTB pressure range primarily depends on tire width.

Lower pressure specifically allows for:

  • Improved grip. With less pressure, the tire stays in better contact with the ground – a valuable advantage when climbing or braking.

  • Better control on rough terrain. On rocks, roots, or small obstacles, a softer tire absorbs some of the shocks and helps the wheel stay in contact with the ground. This increases the bike's stability and the rider's control.

  • Increased comfort on technical sections. Fewer vibrations are transmitted to the frame and the rider's arms, which reduces fatigue on long rides.

MTB pressure guidelines according to tire width:

  • 2.1-2.25″ (53-57 mm) tires: approximately 1.8-2.4 bar

  • 2.3-2.4″ (58-61 mm) tires: approximately 1.6-2.2 bar

  • 2.5″ and wider (≈ 63 mm and up) tires: approximately 1.4-2 bar

On hard surfaces or long gravel sections, you can slightly increase the pressure to reduce rolling resistance.

Influence of rider weight

Rider weight is one of the key parameters for determining the correct pressure. The heavier the rider, the higher the pressure needs to be. Otherwise, the tire deforms more under the load, which increases rolling resistance and the risk of damaging the inner tube or rim.

Simple guidelines for setting good pressure:

  • less than 65 kg: lower end of the recommended range;
  • 65–85 kg: middle range;
  • more than 85 kg: upper end of the range.

It's important to adapt tire pressure to the rider's weight.

For example, for MTB tires 2.3-2.4″ (58-61 mm):

  • 60 kg rider: approximately 1.7-1.8 bar
  • 75 kg rider: approximately 1.9-2.0 bar
  • 90 kg rider: approximately 2.1-2.2 bar

These figures serve as a starting point: pressure can then be adjusted according to desired comfort, terrain, and riding style.

Choosing the right tire pressure is one of the simplest adjustments to significantly improve a bike's handling. It directly influences speed, comfort, grip, and tire lifespan.
