The 6 most common bike breakdowns and how to avoid them

Les 6 pannes de vélo les plus fréquentes et comment les évite

With the increasing popularity of cycling as a daily mode of transport, one reality is becoming clear: the more a bike is used, the more attention it requires. And in repair shops, certain breakdowns recur again and again.

Here are the six most common breakdowns, their causes, and good habits to prevent them.

1. The Flat Tire — the unavoidable one

This is the number one breakdown. Debris on the road, tire wear, or insufficient pressure: the causes are numerous.

How to avoid it: check tire pressure every two to three weeks, inspect the tread, and replace overly worn tires.

2. Worn or poorly adjusted brakes

Less effective braking, noise, or a spongy feeling: signs not to be ignored.

How to avoid it: regularly check the condition of the brake pads, adjust cable tension, and replace worn parts in time.

3. Worn chain

A poorly maintained chain stretches and eventually damages the entire drivetrain.

How to avoid it: lubricate the chain regularly and replace it every 2,000 to 3,000 km to avoid costly repairs.

4. Drivetrain problems

Skipping gears, difficult or noisy shifting: often linked to poor adjustment or a misaligned derailleur.

How to avoid it: avoid shifting gears while stationary, check derailleur alignment, and perform regular adjustments.

5. Warped wheels or broken spokes

Repeated impacts can deform the wheel and affect stability.

How to avoid it: avoid violent impacts, monitor spoke tension, and have the wheel trued at the first signs.

6. Electric bike breakdowns

Loss of battery range, temperamental motor, or electronic issues: specific breakdowns on the rise.

How to avoid it: properly maintain the battery (avoid full discharges, store at moderate temperatures) and have any malfunction diagnosed quickly.

Most of these breakdowns have one thing in common: they can be avoided with minimal maintenance. Regularly checking your bike, intervening at the first signs of wear, and not waiting for a complete breakdown—these are the keys to riding smoothly and limiting expenses.
